Happy Saturday, CoContesters, and welcome back to our regular remodelling sessions! This week we are featuring some brilliant design advice for you to stylishly update your home. Last week, we took a look at how to employ chalkboard paint, while today we’ll be taking a good, thorough look at some wonderful and amazing basement makeovers.
Basement makeovers, or conversions as they are more formally known, have gained a huge amount of popularity, especially in space-poor city locations. Living in a city frequently means residing in a tight, cramped or cloistered space, while basements are oft-neglected, and ripe for renovation! Read on below to take a peek in some of the best!
Making the most of basement space
First up, we wander into what has to be one of the most luxurious looking basements we have seen. This downstairs domestic treasure features none of the usual cavernous attributes, consequently creating a welcoming and enjoyable family friendly space.
Padded walls with a range of artwork help the room to feel welcoming and inviting, while the built-in bar certainly doesn’t hurt either. Fancy a drink down here? I certainly do!
A wine wonderland
Next up we head downstairs into a true wine lover’s dream cellar space. Replete with a range of built in shelves, while taking care to display them effectively, the designers have well and truly gone above and beyond. Reminiscent of something from a James Bond flick, with a spy-esque ambience, this room is sure to impress and delight even the most sober of critics.

Let in that light!
Amazing basement makeovers aren’t simply about lavish domestic adornments and opulent (perhaps unnecessary) appendages; they are practical areas of the home, providing essential room for its occupants. As well as thinking about the latest accessories and entertainment fixtures, you also need to be practical. Within basements there is often one big problem, lighting.
In this example we see the architects have brought in extra light through the use of a roof opening, while maintaining a sense of cohesion with the original structure.

Whoa! How about a living in the lap of luxury?
Okay, enough with practicality, let’s talk opulence. When talking amazing basement makeovers, it doesn’t get much better than this incredible indoor pool space by Wilkinson Beven. Located in the French Alps ski resort town of Courchevel, this private chalet boasts a surprising hidden luxury. Featuring a 10-metre Infinity pool, private massage room, Jacuzzi, sauna and sumptuous living areas, this striking space is infused with the essence of alpine life.
Of course, this is generally out of reach for the common homeowner, but it doesn’t hurt to dream, right? If however, you would like to see more, follow the link here, and begin planning your refurbishment today!
Make use of the space effectively and efficiently
Last, but certainly not least, we head within a gorgeous basement conversion that has taken a disused space and wonderfully transformed it. Designed as a children’s art area, the designer has brilliantly infused a welcoming and inviting aura, while ensuring warmth and comfort.
The basement has been employed in an effective manner, consequently adding valuable floor space to this practical and usable home.
